Somalia and its plight

Famine, political instability, religious fanaticism, drought, armed violence - all associated with this single third world country located in the Horn of Africa and has seen the worst of all situations.

Somalian children, thousands of them, have been compromised in the face of the political agenda and religious fanaticism. Hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes to take refuge in the neighboring countries with no proper means of feeding themselves. Most of the refugees think living in refuge camps is better than sitting back in their homeland and waiting to die out of hunger.

The plight of Somalia is manifold: (i) local religious group not allowing the international aid to come for help of the Somalians, (ii) most relief agencies that were working in the country were forced to leave years ago from Somalia due to attacks on their workers, so whatever aid agencies are left working in Somalia do not have enough capacity to deal with this worst drought of Somalia, (iii) new international agencies are not willing to come into Somalia due to international political situation.

The international community has 2 immediate options: (i) to sit back and wait for the local religious group to lose their grip and die out as a result of this draught. This is when the international community can then easily enter into the country, or (ii) risk taking a military action and force their way into the country for helping out the needy Somalians. But this option may have negative impact on the socio-political situation of the country as Somalia has held history behind itself that whenever a foreign military operation has taken place, it has triggered unintentional consequences resulting in the uprising of the locals against the foreign help!
